Antioxidant activity of extract from elder flower (Sambucus nigra L.)

Abstract

The antioxidant activity of an extract from elder flower (Sambucus nigra L.) was tested by assessing its ability to neutralize DPPH and hydroxyl (OH•) radicals. The IC50 concentrations for the inhibition of the respective radicals were found to be 0.152 ěg/ml and 0.0122 ěg/ml. The extract possesses antioxidant activity in a linoleic acid model system, as 0.005% extract concentration resulted in 57.60% inhibition of conjugated dienes formation, while at a concentration of 0.01% the extract inhibited 76.02% of the generation of secondary linoleic acid oxidized products.
